Server Conversion

by EnigmaFactory · Tech

Today’s announcement marks quite the milestone for the project. As we have hinted at previously, a backend services exploration evolved into a full-blown conversion. When h1ddentree started this project as a solo developer, he leveraged his expansive JavaScript skills and built out an impressive NodeJS-based server structure. Since that time, the team has expanded and the options available to us with it. The time came for exploration on server conversion. The benefits, and relative ease of the conversion became immediately apparent and the decision was made to fully convert the ECO server to C#.

Over the course of the last 2 months, Bognar, Stoli, H1dden, and team, have converted and began to enhance every bit of our server code from JS to C#. Of course weighing the timing and impact was important. We have previously talked of Osgul, the Ogre home city, and its (2nd iteration) progress, and wanted to ensure this progress wasn’t halted. To that end, the backend team managed to develop the server in a way that the existing client could hot swap between the two server types on the fly! Osgul development would not have to be put on ice.

We are incredibly excited for what this conversion means to the future of the project. The myriad of benefits (and challenges!) that came along with the conversion is further detailed in an extensive write up by Bognar here: https://discord.com/channels/804170096082681876/804171808231784535/1123793214353195068 where we will also be happy to field questions and talk about the future of ECO.

Also taking the opportunity to show off the new Patch Notes explorer in client. We're excited to returning to a version''d patch cadence and have moved to version 0.7.0 given the large changes that have come along with this version. https://evercraftonline.com/patchNotes

As always, thank you being part of this adventure!
